Prescription Drug Addiction

Dallas and Fort Worth

Prescription drug addiction is one that is rapidly increasing as our society continues to develop and prescribe more medication to deal with ailments and illness.

This type of addiction can be confusing and difficult to identify because a respected and trusted doctor has prescribed the medication. Initially, the medication did work to relieve your symptoms, but you find yourself having to increase your dosage frequently to try to experience the relief you felt in the beginning.

You feel like you are in a never ending cycle and are not sure when enough will be enough. You worry that you will always experience the same amount of pain and are feeling like there is nothing else out there that can help you manage your struggle.

Are you experiencing…

  • Finding yourself needing more and more of your medication to experience release of your symptoms

  • Worrying you will not have enough medication to make it until your next prescription refill

  • Working with several doctors to get the amount of medication you need

  • Not exploring other treatment options besides medication

  • Experiencing mood swings or depression

  • Finding other vague symptoms to explain to your doctor in order to get more medication

  • Experiencing increased anxiety between taking your medication

  • Using medication prescribed to others

  • Have a history of drug abuse or addiction

No one starts out taking prescription medication with the expectation of becoming an addict.

Unfortunately, medications such as Vicodin, codeine, and oxycontin are physically addictive. This also includes prescriptions prescribed for mental health needs such as Xanax, Adderall, and Ritalin.

They lessen the brain’s own ability to produce positive chemicals such as dopamine and endorphins so that one begins to crave the addition of the medication.

This type of addiction is one of the hardest in which to break free because it alters the brain’s chemicals so significantly.
