Gambling Addiction
Are you experiencing any of the following:
- Feeling the need to hide your gambling from friends and/or family members
- Gambling when you do not have the money to do so
- Feeling compulsive with your gambling
- Attempts at trying to limit your gambling have not been successful
- Friends and/or family have expressed concerns and are worried about you
- Making risky bets with the potential of losing important things in your life
- Choosing gambling over going to work, time with friends and family, or other hobbies and interests
- All consuming thoughts about a bet you have placed or the next time you will get the chance to gamble
A gambling addiction can develop slowly. One day you may wake up and realize your seemingly innocent hobby has become an addiction. You may be struggling financially, losing relationships, functioning less adequately at work, or having trouble focusing, among other consequences. Often a gambling addiction can lead to anxiety, panic attacks, and depression. Those with this addiction may have a tendency to isolate themselves from family and friends and are consistently stressed about when they will get the opportunity to gamble next, where they will get the money to pay off bets, and whether the next bet will be fruitful. Many struggle with this addiction alone because of embarrassment or a lack of acceptance. They feel they are in control and can stop gambling anytime they wish. For some, this is a possibility. For most others, outside help and treatment may be required in order to break free from their gambling addiction.
Gambling is commonly accepted in our society as a recreational activity, and it often does not have the stigma of a drug or alcohol addiction. Because of this, people often do not realize this problem as being a common one and often find it hard to identify. Many times, the gambling addiction has led to financial destruction before anyone realizes there is a problem. Gambling addicts often feel like they are not hurting anyone, so they do not see it as a problem. They fail to realize that they are spending less time in engaging in everyday life and things and people are slowly going away. At the same time, their financial situation may be effecting those around them as well as themselves.
